          Description
Fresh-to-the-hobby example of Babe Ruth's classic 1933 Goudey #181 card signed boldly across the front by Ruth. Graded and encapsulated as Authentic by PSA with a NM 7 signature. Within the card-collecting hobby, there exists for every player an iconic card (or cards) that immediately comes to mind when that player is brought up in conversation. For Babe Ruth, the 1933 R319 Goudey #181 is one of those cards. Depicting a full-size portrait of Ruth set against a bold green background, this card is not only one of the key cards to the 1933 Goudey set but also an integral piece of any Babe Ruth, gum-card, or Top 250 Sportscards collection. The offered example is recently unearthed, along with a number of other signed Goudey cards presented within this auction, from the collection of our consignor's deceased grandfather, who was known to visit ballparks as a child. He undoubtedly caught Ruth on a good day and benefited from a bold inscription in black fountain pen across the image. While the card is neatly trimmed along the four edges, it remains exceptionally pleasing, with a crisp image, bold colors, and moderate to heavy creasing that does not in any way detract from the card's overall display value. Ruth signed cards are scarce, and the recent much-heralded "Uncle Jimmy Collection" introduced several new examples into the hobby while also serving to increase interest in, and pricing for, these remarkable collectibles. This card presents a potentially affordable point of entry into the world of Babe Ruth signed trading cards without compromising at all on the signature quality or presentation offered by other more expensive examples.
